RAINY SEASON
On the Kenyan coast, the rainy season is usually April–June. Outside of that period, there may be occasional showers, but not prolonged rain.
SAFARI
The best time for safari depends on the park you choose. Safari costs around 700–1000 Euro depending on number of days and nights. The closest parks to Diani Beach / Galu, where I live, are Tsavo and Amboseli.
FLIGHTS
The nearest airport is Mombasa. You can also fly to Nairobi and take the train to Mombasa, which takes about 5 hours. If you’re lucky, you may see elephants and giraffes along the way. The train costs approximately 20–70 Euro depending on first or second class.
If you flying from my home country Sweden Ethiopian Airlines flies from Stockholm Arlanda with a stopover in Ethiopia and then on to Mombasa. This is the most convenient option, and tickets usually cost around 7,000–10,000 SEK depending on season. The total travel time is about 12 hours, usually overnight.
Cheaper options exist, and you can find flights from around 5,500 SEK if you fly to Nairobi. Search for example on Momondo.
Whether you arrive in Mombasa or take the train, I have a driver who can pick you up. This costs around 30–50 EURO depending on the vehicle size, paid in cash directly to the driver, so please withdraw Kenyan shillings (KES) before arrival.
VISA / ETA
Apply online about one week before departure. It is simple and costs around 350 SEK.
FOOD
Breakfast is included.
Other meals can be prepared in the shared kitchen. Food costs depend on your choices. Vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken, and local food are inexpensive — more than half the price compared to Sweden. Eating out at the lovely local restaurants varies, but everything is cheaper than in Sweden. You decide your own food budget.SHOPS
There are three large supermarkets, local markets, cozy cafés, and small stalls with African crafts. There are also ATMs that accept Mastercard.
VACCINATIONS
No vaccinations are required. I have also never taken malaria tablets.
TRANSPORT
Uber and regular taxis are available. I mostly use tuk-tuks.
THE OCEAN & BEACH
It is truly magical
There is a coral reef offshore, so there is no need to worry about dangerous animals. You can simply enjoy the crystal-clear blue water. You can also kite surf and dive.Long barefoot walks are perfect in the morning and evening; midday can be too hot. Bring sunscreen, a sun hat, and light clothing for sun protection. Snorkel gear if you have it.
TEMPERATURE
It stays around 27–32°C year-round and is humid. The coolest month is August, when I sometimes wear a hoodie in the evening. Otherwise, it is warm.
VILLA AMANI
Amani means “peace,” and that is what I intended to create when I built the house. This is not a place for partying, but for people who want to land, rest, and remember how extraordinary they are.
There are four rooms in the villa and a large yoga hall. I live in one of the rooms, and the others are rented out. Each room has a large, comfortable double bed, private shower and toilet, and a private terrace. Towels, bath sheets, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner are provided.
All rooms have mosquito nets and fans.
There is very good fiber internet.
A washing machine is available — my housekeeper can help with laundry for a small fee.Bring: adapter for electrical outlets.
It takes 2 minutes to walk down to the ocean and the pool just before the beach. There is also a large pool directly outside Villa Amani.
